Syria travel guide
Before the eruption of a devastating civil war in 2011, Syria enjoyed a reputation as one of the safest Middle Eastern countries. Most visitors took a trip to Syria for a chance to visit Damascus, an ancient city filled with Christian church spires and Muslim minarets. The country offered tourists a lively cafe culture and many art galleries, which often sat next door to traditional hammams. Today, Syria represents one of the world's most dangerous places, nearly impossible to visit by foreigners. Until peace returns, dozens of Roman ruins--legendary Palmyra among them--remain off limits and off the radar to all but the most intrepid and daring explorers.
