Porto

Unvanquished City
Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.Shop till you drop at Mercado Bom Sucesso and Forum Aveiro. You'll get in some beach time at Praia Fluvial de Loriga and Praia dos Palheiros da Tocha. Get out of town with these interesting Porto side-trips: Guimaraes (Largo da Oliveira & Paco dos Duques de Braganca) and Serra da Estrela (in Serra da Estrela). Dedicate the 18th (Sat) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. Next up on the itinerary: pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja do Carmo, do a tasting at Sandeman Cellars, enjoy breathtaking views from Torre dos Clerigos, and browse the fresh offerings at Mercado do Bolhao.
