Porto

— 59 nights

Unvanquished City

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Get out of town with these interesting Porto side-trips: Coimbra (Coro Paroquial da Sé Nova de Coimbra, University of Coimbra, &more), Convento de Sao Salvador de Vilar de Frades (in Barcelos) and Braga (Arco da Porta Nova, Elevador do Bom Jesus do Monte, &more). Dedicate the 3rd (Thu) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. Spend the 2nd (Wed) exploring nature at Peneda-Geres National Park. There's still lots to do: snap pictures at Ponte de Dom Luis I, get into the urban bustle at Palacio da Bolsa, take in the spiritual surroundings of Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral), and look for gifts at Livraria Lello.

To see maps, photos, and tourist information, refer to the Porto trip planner.

If you are flying in from Brazil, the closest major aiport is Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport. In January, plan for daily highs up to 16°C, and evening lows to 7°C.
