Home to sultans for centuries, Topkapi Palace is a World Heritage Site with a rich history and superb Ottoman architecture. Built by Sultan Mehmed II in the 15th century, the enormous palace's courtyards and buildings were, at one time, home to almost 4,000 people. Though much of the site is off limits to tourists, one of the highlights you can access is its highly ornate harem, with an intriguing history and notable interiors. Though royalty later moved to European-style residences along the Bosphorus, this palace is important for being truly Ottoman in spirit and design. Using our custom trip planner, Istanbul attractions like Topkapi Palace can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Definitely worth visiting if you are in Istanbul. The history on show is phenomenal. One of the highlights of our trip.  more »
  • Visited on a very hot day so kept a lot in the shaded areas. We paid 100tl each just for the palace and gardens which, in my opinion, was a little expensive. You could pay extra to visit the Harem...  more »

  • The best historic museum that I have been in my entire life! One of the best places to visit during your time in Istanbul. Lots of history!! It is huge and you get to see how how once the emperors of the world lived. Every tile, china, ceiling, every detail brings you to the old times. By the way, it has an absolutely fantastic view to the Marmara sea in one of the main balconies. You should see Istanbul in the eyes of the Sultan's in that balcony.
  • One of the most historic places you’ll find in Istanbul. It’s a must see for every tourist that comes to this city. Filled with history, the place needs a whole day just for itself so you can fully admire it. I suggest you buy a city pass in advance so you can skip the lines at the ticket stores. There are great offers for city passes that are even delivered to your hotel.
