St. John's Episcopal Church, Brooklyn

The first rector of St. John’s, a strong opponent of slavery, planned and built this multiracial parish in 1826, while slavery continued to be the law of the state of New York.

We remain a multiracial community, welcoming all people and rejoicing in our diversity of age, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and cultural background, as we join the wider church in seeking to restore all people to unity with God and each other through Christ.

We are committed to serve God and one another through the beauty of Anglo-Catholic worship, outreach to our community, education of ourselves and our children, and engaging warm fellowship.

We seek new ideas and opinions of visitors and new members to our community, remembering that in welcoming the stranger, we are welcoming Christ.

We are still perhaps the most diverse congregation in the Diocese of Long Island -- and quite proud to be! We count among our membership peoples from all over the world and all over the country. We are black, brown, white and all sorts of shades in between! We are old and young, gay and straight, economically well off and also poor. But we are all rich in spirit as we worship God and serve the world in Christ's name. Click Meet Our People to the left to meet some of us!

Our parish was founded in 1826-7 and is the second oldest Episcopal Parish in Brooklyn! Put St. John's Episcopal Church on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Brooklyn trip planner.
