Spread across 20 city blocks in the city's historic district, Independence National Historical Park is the place to go for a better sense of the country's official birthplace. You're bound to wait in some lines; more than 3.5 million visitors come here each year, primarily to see the iconic Independence Hall and Liberty Bell, just two of the 30 sites. At Benjamin Franklin's Museum, take advantage of interactive exhibits to learn about this founding father. While greenspaces allow kids to burn off some energy, you might want to have something on hand to keep them (or you) occupied when it's time to get in line. Philly is my home area, and I have seen all the changes in Independence National Park over a span of 50 years. Not all of them add value to the experience. First, there is the world we now have: everyone has to submit to a metal detector to enter historic buildings. Second, the beauty of the park and buildings is marred by gates and fences that make it almost impossible to roam the gardens freely or even take a nice photo. The Visitors Center is designed to take some of the burden from the historic sites; crowds are funneled through there first -- and I suggest that visitors do that first. There you can get your tour times for Independence Hall and plan what you want to see. One of the valuable changes added in recent years has been the presentation of inclusive history on placards at each site. Take time to read these. I never tire of seeing the Liberty Bell; it reminds me that our freedom is important and that we had to grow as a nation to extend freedom to all persons. The architectural beauty of Independence Hall and the surrounding buildings is stunning and very well kept by the Park Service, along with the grounds. This park will take time in the summer -- there are lines. But people come from all over the world to see this birthplace of a new idea for democracy.
Wonderful National Historical Park run by the Park Service. There are a lot of items going on here. There were some costumed people, a story time, the museum and tours. The parking structure is a bonus- you have a place to park- you pay for it, but for tourist, something I was willing to do. Overall very well done. Keep up the good work!
