Contained within the Nambung National Park, The Pinnacles Desert present an eerie landscape of limestone pillars rising from the sand about 100 km (62 mi) north of Perth. Largely unexplored until the 1960s, this area now attracts over 250,000 tourists per year. Recent developments include a visitor center, offering a brief educational lesson about these ancient stones created from seashells in an earlier epoch rich in marine life. Time your visit for early morning or late afternoon, when the play of light brings out the colors of the stones, and the extended shadows of the formations deliver a contrast highlighting their features. Emus and kangaroos, which make their permanent home at this park, are also more likely to be spotted in the early morning hours. Stopped off at the Pinnacles as we were driving down from Kalbarri on route to Perth, with a partly cloudy day the pinnacles statues stood out. There was pretty much no shadows so we got to see the formations in a different light as I had see nearly two decades ago. We walked around the formations for a couple of hours following the tracks up to the lookout before jumping in our car and driving around and taking a look from a different perspective.

This visit was a wonderful experience. I was surprised how big the area is. So well set out, well run and well maintained. Very cool!
