Anbangbang Billabong, Jabiru (Kakadu National Park)

Anbangbang Billabong is anything but a "stagnant pool of water," as many of Australia’s billabongs are often described. Sitting in the shadow of Norlangie Rock, a large rock outcrop contained within the Kakadu National Park, this billabong offers numerous opportunities to observe and photograph a wide range of native wildlife, such as waterfowl and wallabies. Slightly off the beaten path and never overcrowded by tourists, the area features a variety of habitats, including paperbark swamps, fringing woodlands, and sandstone plateaus. A walking trail takes visitors around the circumference of the billabong, with a number of convenient lookout spots and several well-maintained picnic areas. Be sure to bring plenty of bug spray, sunscreen, and lots of drinking water.
