Over 10,000 species of native and exotic plants and animals inhabit a lush and immaculately kept landscape at Royal Botanic Gardens. Originally established in 1846 by Lieutenant Governor Charles La Trobe, the gardens today provide 38 hectares (94 acres) of colorful natural displays for you to wander among. The manmade Guilfoyle's Volcano serves as a reservoir and offers you a stunning view of the Melbourne skyline. The Ian Potter Foundation Children's Garden provides an engaging introduction to botany for kids, and the lake system hosts diverse aquatic species. If you visit during summer, special events happen on the grounds almost daily. To visit Royal Botanic Gardens and other attractions in Melbourne, use our Melbourne tour app.

  • We recently went to the Light Scape at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne. It was absolutely beautiful. The installations and accompanying music were wonderful. It finishes on 7 August 2022...

  • An absolutely beautiful open space with room to breathe and release the stresses of the week. A family-friendly and pet friendly park with many benches too. Be sure to bring along a good book, lunch, and a hot drink during the wet and cold seasons!!
  • Absolutely gorgeous park with plant life from all around the world. They have sections of plants that are from different regions (New Zealand, Australian forest, etc.). There is also a large number of common areas for just relaxing and having picnics, or whatever else. Lots of birds around as well.
