Over 10,000 species of native and exotic plants and animals inhabit a lush and immaculately kept landscape at Royal Botanic Gardens. Originally established in 1846 by Lieutenant Governor Charles La Trobe, the gardens today provide 38 hectares (94 acres) of colorful natural displays for you to wander among. The manmade Guilfoyle's Volcano serves as a reservoir and offers you a stunning view of the Melbourne skyline. The Ian Potter Foundation Children's Garden provides an engaging introduction to botany for kids, and the lake system hosts diverse aquatic species. If you visit during summer, special events happen on the grounds almost daily. To visit Royal Botanic Gardens and other attractions in Melbourne, use our Melbourne tour app.

We did this tour with our young kids and we enjoyed it very much. Our tour guide Eli was very friendly and informative.

My wife and I visited these beautiful Gardens after we visited The Shrine of Remembrance. We had booked a High Tea at Jardin Tan Restaurant next to the Visitor's Centre and wanted to have a walk...

So peaceful in the middle of the city. It's strange but nice. Not many food options inside. But the walks are brilliant, even if you're someone who's not really into nature walks. When the weather is nice, you could spend hours here with a nice book. All that's missing is some good Melbourne coffee shops.

These gardens are wonderful. The children's garden is thoughtfully designed, it is accessible for wheelchairs and prams, the variety of garden types is very interesting, the fern garden was is own little ecosystem. I highly recommend a visit. Parents of youngsters - there's is no parents' room for warming food/bottles, best feeding etc but there are baby change tables in the toilet blocks.
