Manly Beach stands as one of the best places to experience Australian beach culture. Captain Arthur Phillip gave the sandy area its name based on his perception of the masculine behavior of the indigenous people he met when he arrived in 1788. Now the long sandy beaches also are home to trendy shops and nightclubs. If you want activity, try surfing, windsurfing, parasailing, snorkeling, or scuba diving. If you prefer leisure, enjoy a picnic on the sheltered beach of Manly Cove. Only 11 km (7 mi) from downtown Sydney, the beach is easily accessible from Circular Quay via regular ferry or fast catamaran. Love Manly beach, it's where I plan to live permanently one day. Took friends to Shelly beach, and they loved it. You can't go past the Steyne pub, great place for a beer with friends, people watching, and the staff are awesome, very friendly, accommodating, and show genuine interest in patrons. Such a great place to sight see, and so much history.

I Love Manly especially at night when the crowds have died down and you hear the waves hitting the sand. This is truly a Zen place to be at. During the day it's chaotic and hectic and people are usually everywhere but it adds a certain hipster and happening vibe to Manly Beach. All in all it is a must with a rockpool at one end and public toilets available also.
