Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. • This is a great day out with the ids and is totally free, they ask for a contribution which i think is great cause you can give what you can afford rather than ruling it out by cost. We loved it.

  • Absolutely amazing museum! The interior and exterior of the building is absolutely stunning and the museum contents/exhibitions are really, really good. We were fascinated by what was there and spent a good couple of hours walking around. It's not a huge place but the amount of items it holds do take a while to observe which of course, is not a bad thing at all! I'd 100% recommend to anyone visiting Vienna. Also, we bought tickets online so we was able to walk straight in (and avoid the small queue) which is nice so I'd recommend doing that.
  • Great museum!! There’s all natural displays of rocks and meteors and mineral and animals and insects and birds and fossils etc. The museum has received an award for taxidermy. So you can expect it’s going to be good! A amazing display natural diversity blows my mind. There’s also a cafe that you can eat and drink at. I had the beef goulash soup which was great!
