Create an itinerary including Hooge Crater Museum
Located near the Hooge Crater, Hooge Crater Museum commemorates the battle that formed this artificial topography. First British troops blasted a German bastion with 1,700 kg (3,748 lbs) of dynamite, and then the Allied forces attacked the remaining German troops inside the crater. The chapel housing the museum was originally built to honor the battle's fallen soldiers, but later fell into disrepair. A family purchased the property and in 1993 restored the chapel as a privately managed museum. Browse the museum's collection including weaponry, mortar shells, rare uniforms, and supplies donated by individuals and families, as well as an archival film of soldiers at Hooge. An on-site cafe offers Flemish specialties; check out the collection of "trench art"--chiseled shell cases. • Excellent collection of WW1 artifacts. We've been a few times and the museum offers up new items to view each time. The cafe that the museum is attached to is a bonus. They serve hot and cold, alcohol and non alcoholic beverages and the food is very good also. The owners have a really nice way about them and make you feel very welcome. There are also holiday lets at the site, so this could be a good base to have for a longer visit to the Western Front. We highly recommend that you visit this unique place and to take a look at its history.
  • awesome place, be prepared to spend the whole day. Great food in the restaurant too, fantastic .... highly recommended
