Sint-jacobskapel, Lier

Over the centuries, the chapel has been rebuilt and restored many times, it was badly damaged during the First World War, but rebuilt again, it has survived to the present day. Come in, pray and light a candle for your loved ones.

This Gothic chapel was built by the city council in 1383 and dedicated to James the Greater. It was ravaged by fire in 1479 and restored shortly afterwards. In 1636 the Jesuits officially became chaplains to the Spanish troops in Lier during the Spanish Era (1494 - 1714). Because the chapel was used as a parish church for the Spanish troops, people in Lier soon spoke of the Spanish chapel. A nickname that is still used today. Several Spanish coats of arms still hang in the church. During the First World War, the chapel was set on fire by the Germans, but after the First World War it was almost completely rebuilt. The chapel is located on the pilgrimage route to Compostela.
