Create an itinerary including Diocletian's Palace
In the heart of the city look for the ruins of Diocletian's Palace--a significant example of Roman architecture and a World Heritage Site. Between 295 and 305 CE, the Roman Emperor built the palace near his birthplace as his retirement home. Walk under the Silver Gate and enter the the Peristyle, the central open-air area. Opposite the gate is the medieval church of St. Dominic, formerly Diocletian's Mausoleum. Admire the excavated remains of the palace's basement. Look for the two granite sphinxes, which Diocletian brought from Egypt. One is still on the Peristyle, and the second sits headless in front of Jupiter's temple. • The palace is very impressive, and it is a must-see in Split. The only downside it could be very crowded. Allow half-day.

  • Great place to visit. Split summer festival - performance of Verdi's Aida was something worth of going to. Opera spectacle in real ambience, ruins that are over 1700 years old perfectly fit the stage and auditorium. World well know opera singers performed it. Truly spectacular even for those that are not much opera lovers.
  • This was cool to wonder around and inseparable from the centre of Split. Of you haven't done any of the old medieval coastal towns then come here and walk around. If you want a cool breeze on a hot day stand outside the cellar entrance or buy a ticket and visit!
