Create an itinerary including Lenbachhaus
Housed in the former residence of Franz von Lenbach, Lenbachhaus was sold to the city in 1924 by the artist's widow. Shortly after, Munich's city art collections found a home together inside the building. The exhibits map out Germany's major art movements from the 19th century to present day. The Munich Secession group's work combined Impressionism, avant-garde, and Art Nouveau to create a style completely German. View their work and others in the 19th century gallery. A gallery dedicated to the Objectivity movement continues the journey through German art history. For art created after the end of World War II, visit the Art After 1945 gallery, where experiential, conceptual, and installation art dominates. The friendly layout includes an intimate restaurant in a modern structure overlooking the museum grounds. • We were disappointed by the art collection in the museum. While the old building is beautiful to see, the art was quite limited.

  • A well curated and interesting gallery with a wide range of historical and contemporary artists. They unfortunately were strict on the student pricing rules and would not allow registered students, only current students the discount, unlike most other art galleries. The building was well air conditioned and had many seats throughout the exhibit. I would’ve liked to see more direction on where each exhibit started and a better map of the exhibitions. Similarly some of the first floor exhibits did not feel like they had sufficient explanations or artist introductions, specifically for Joseph Beuys exhibit. Otherwise, there was a considerable amount of English translations throughout the exhibits. Would recommend to see more local and curated art.
  • Welcoming staffs and well curated. Very affordable entrance fee. The route of moving along exhibition could have been planned in a more efficient way though. Completely enjoyed.
