Looking like an illustration from a book of fairy tales, Schloss Neuschwanstein stands perched on a mountain cliff. King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned this 19th-century palace. He paid for it out of his personal fortune rather than from public funds. It was intended as a refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. Since then, more than 60 million people have visited, drawn by the picturesque location and romantic design. Constructed under the direction of architect Eduard Riedel, the building embodies the architectural fashion known as castle romanticism. You'll also note that it embraces Ludwig II's immoderate enthusiasm for the operas of his close friend Richard Wagner. Check the weather conditions before you plan your trip; misty conditions and rain often reduce visibility to almost zero at those heights. You can buy tickets online or at the ticket center in the village below the castle. PutSchloss Neuschwanstein into our Schwangau trip site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

Although the interior was never finished there is enough to gauge how impressive the final version would have been. The views from the castle are amazing. The tour is very good and informative...

Really nice castle. The interiors are even better than the exteriors. Totally worth a day trip to this place. From inside the castle you have incredible views.

Absolutely amazing location! This castle is just like from the fairytale! Take Romantic route when going there- you will enjoy beautiful countryside views and a lot of cows on the road! Castle itself located on the hill and reaching it by foot will take some 20-30 minutes. But you can take bus or horse ride there also! Tickets to enter the castle should be booked in advance- otherwise you will enjoy only from the outside, as we did!

I had been wanting to visit for many years since my first visit to Bavaria. I'm glad I did as it is, obviously, a very impressive and beautiful building set in fantastic scenery. No pictures are permitted to be taken while on the tour itself. Obviously some people still try, but thankfully the staff are quick to stop them. Tours are run on a timed entry system and conducted with audio guides. Surgical masks are required. Homemade/cloth masks are not permitted. If you try to enter without a mask, or with a cloth mask, you will be made to pay €4 for an accepted one. Buy your tickets ahead of time. A limited number of day tickets are available at the tourist centre in Schwangau (no tickets are available for purchase at the castle itself) but they go very quickly. Don't miss the view from Marienbrucke before going into the castle itself. Small cafe on site after the tour. Not bad, not great. Gift shop has usual kind of trinkets and is pricey.
