Explore the dark side of Hungarian and European history at House of Terror Museum, a specialty museum focusing on fascist and communist regimes. The permanent exhibits feature artifacts from Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, the fascist Arrow Cross Party, and the communist AVH (Hungarian State Protection Authority). Walk into the depths of violent, dictatorial moments that took place the 20th century by stepping into the museum's basement, where AVH prisoners were once held and tortured. These cells serve as a memorial to victims of the country's bloody regimes. Since it opened in 2002, this museum has become a member of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience. • I found the museum interesting and sad at the same time. Definitely aimed at Hungarian market. Staff were rude and gruff also.

  • Very impressed with the exhibition and design of the museum overall. I expected something usual that you can see in other similar museums all over Europe, with memorabilia from those days, but this is on another level. Here a lot of thought went into the storytelling, into the design, even the music is specifically tailored to different rooms to create anticipated effect. Hands down, this is the best experience I had in any museum in the world so far. The main entrance staircase is worth noting on its own - such well thought space, setting the mood perfectly for the rest of the visit. Just wow.
  • Really rich multi-media storytelling about an awful period of Hungarian history. Great level of detail, including harrowing and emotional First-Person accounts. Allow for two hours. The audio guide is excellent and I would highly recommend.
