Create an itinerary including Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Get ready for an outdoor adventure among some of New Zealand's best volcanic scenery at Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Linking Mangatepopo and Ketetahi hot springs, this hiking trail leads you past three active volcanoes, colorful mineral-filled lakes, steaming fumaroles, and boiling springs. With a length of 19.4 km (12.1 mi) and frequent rugged terrain, the trek requires a reasonable level of fitness, adequate equipment, and, importantly, sufficient amounts of drinking water. During the summer numerous shuttles operate between the two trailheads and connect them to the nearby towns. In the winter, however, very few shuttles run; avoid long waits or having to walk back to your car by taking one of the guided tours that includes a bus transfer. A visit to Tongariro Alpine Crossing represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Tongariro National Park trip itinerary website to plot your vacation.

  • A well marked, easy to follow track (in decent weather) that is considered a hard day by many people but is pretty straightforward if you do a lot of walking. It has some fairly significant erosion.....  more

  • Great hike, not too difficult although it is quite tiring. You get the most amazing views and experience a variety of terrain. The devil's staircase deserves it's title, as, in my haste to get to the carpark, my legs went through hell traversing the track after the hike.
  • A unique experience hiking amongst active volcanoes in what seems like another planet. Start early (7-8am) to avoid the crowds and heat, and take 2 litres of water. Start from the Mangatepopo Rd end. Allow 5-7 hrs to complete the 19.5km. The weather can change quickly and its always 5-15 degrees c. cooler at the top and usually windy.
