Paco dos Duques de Braganca
A living reminder of Portugal's colorful past, the atmospheric Paco dos Duques de Braganca sits in the historical center of a World Heritage Site town. Built in the 1420s, the castle originally served as the official residence of Afonso of Braganca, the illegitimate son of King John I. The ambitious Afonso became the patriarch of a powerful dynasty, and his descendants eventually served as kings of Portugal and emperors of Brazil. Encircled by park land, his palace represents one of the finest examples of late-medieval architecture favored by Portuguese nobility during the 15th century. Be sure to visit the first-floor museum, housing a collection of tapestries, porcelains, paintings, and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. This is probably the big attraction in town and it will take an hour to go through all of the rooms in this big palace. Full of antiques, very grand with a gorgeous courtyard and a pretty chapel...

Near to the castle this has been considerably restored without detailed plans of how it used to be. It has furniture, etc representing the period of its use. Someone has decided it should have many...

The palace is beautiful. Especially the chapel. In my opinion the castle itself is not a must see. I’d definitely advise to stroll around the general area of those establishments.

Fantastic palace. The chimneys make the building’s silhouette unique and interesting. The expo inside is a bit on the short side.
