Castelo de S. Jorge, a second-century citadel, overlooks the historical center of the city. This castle dates back to medieval times, approximately 48 BCE, when the city was under Roman rule. Celtic people originally inhabited this hilltop location, but ownership of the area changed over the years from Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians to Romans and a few other key players. In the 10th century, Moorish people fortified the fortress with cerca Moura, or Moorish encirclement. Though the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed much of the castle, the remaining ruins are still open to the public. Explore one of the city's most popular tourist sites by foot, take in views from its high vantage point, and discover the castle's archeological and historic relevance. Plan to see Castelo de S. Jorge and other attractions that appeal to you using our Lisbon driving holiday planning site.

Well worth the time to explore the castle walls [watch some of the steps as it can be treacherous], enjoy the peacocks, and take in the view. I'd definitely get a tuk-tuk ride to the castle and walk..... more

Beautiful views but the castle itself is rather underwhelming. It’s worth the trip for the views of the city, and climbing the streets of Alfama to get there

One of the best place to visit before further exploring the city of Lisbon. It offers breathtaking views on the city panorama and Tagus river. Castle have many multiple viewpoints where You can just sit at and enjoy the views or You can buy some wine or other drinks to accompany the experience. Castle ruins and walls are great to walk through and feel the medieval spirit of it. Visit it only when the weather is good. Peacocks are cool but I don't recommend it to go there on hangover.

The castle was a great experience because you get a mixture of things there. You get a cool garden of peacocks, which is always very cool. There are also great views of the city from the tower and walls. There are also exhibits in a small museum inside the castle for history buffs. There wasn't much in the way of litter. A reminder that you will be to be physically able as there are quite a few steps to get around the caste walls.
