Experience excellent views of Viana do Castelo, the Minho River, and Atlantic Ocean from atop this architecturally intriguing Santuario de Santa Luzia. This mountaintop church was built by acclaimed architects Miguel Ventura Terra and Miguel Nogueira between 1904 and 1959. Climb the staircase or take the funicular uphill to the basilica grounds. View the Revivalist Roman and Byzantine styles that make the structure's design so impressive. If you are feeling adventurous, you can scale the stairs to the top of the towers for incredible views of the surrounding valley, coastline, and city. • We drove all the way up in the car, so no opinion on how to get there using public transportation, which is excellent in Portugal. We recommend cloudy day for not to be blinded ("overexposed") by the reflecting ocean. Rose window nicely lights the interior. Smaller windows around the dome do not contribute as much. There is a way to walk to the gallery around the dome, however, it was closed that day. Consider donating a coin or two : all goes towards restoration (a crowdfunding, of a sort). Enjoy your visit! Hope this helps.
  • This place has an incredible sunset, from where you can see the whole city. Easy access and unmissable. Preferably going on a cloudless day close to sunset. Take the opportunity to visit the majestic church that gives its name to the place.
