See firsthand how kings lived at Kalmar Castle, a 16th-century palace built in Renaissance-style architecture. The castle began as a round defensive tower in the 12th century, a powerful defensive compound strategically built just north of the Danish border. In 1397 it served as the crucial location for signing the Kalmar Union. Explore the dramatic history of the castle through the rooms in the governor's apartments--each represents a different event. Travel over the moat, across the tower bridge, and through the courtyard to see the dungeons, chapel, cannons, and hidden rooms of the castle. Be sure to join a guided tour led by knowledgeable guides dressed in period attire; you'll learn about the ghosts of the castle, among other things. Impressive castle with lots to look at and explore. You can walk around the outside and courtyard for free and pay if you want to walk around the inside. There's a nice gift shop and café on site too.

One of the most interesting castles to visit in all of Europe. It truly feels like you're stepping back in time as you cross the moat and find yourself standing face to face with a living piece of history. DO NOT MISS!

Beautiful place, the entry is free. Inside is rarely open. Easy to reach from the train station. The parking lot next to the train station is also easy to reach (5 min foot Walk) and costs about 30sek (≈3€) for a day, free on weekends!
