Away from touristy Amsterdam, where two of the most beautiful canals of the city meet, you will find Café Thijssen. Well known and appreciated by the locals, this is a no-nonsense bar with a classical look and feel. The wide beer selection, good coffee and food, great view and easy going atmosphere make this ‘brown café’ a perfect base from which to explore the real Amsterdam.

  • Easily in the top ten of the worst service in A’dam, although the competition is fierce!! Took us 2hrs to eat a few sandwiches, then when the order finally came something of course was missing...

  • Lovely coffee shop! Went there to get a traditional Dutch apple pie and it was delicious! It is a very popular spot for locals. On Saturday, one of the most famous food markets in town is on - right next to the coffee shop!
  • We popped in for a break mid day. My partner had to take a work meeting, and I wanted a bite to eat. Place: Thijsse was warm and cozy. The place was bustling with activity,l. A steady stream of customers shuffled in and out of the building. Food: I ordered the soup of the day, which was a split pea soup. It was super thick and full of flavor thanks to the bits of ham that were mixed in. Drinks: I ordered a coffee and my partner ordered the mint tea. The flavor of the month tea was not strong, perhaps because the water was more warm than hot. But the coffee was nice.
