Airlie Beach — 3 nights

Very much a town with an emphasis on the tropical lifestyle, Airlie Beach offers exotic surroundings with palm trees and charming, sandy beaches.
Get out of town with these interesting Airlie Beach side-trips: Hamilton Island (Hamilton Island Marina & Passage Peak). Spend the 13th (Tue) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's still lots to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Airlie Beach Lagoon, take in the pleasant sights at Bicentennial Walkway, and see the world from above with a helicopter tour.

Sydney to Airlie Beach is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of train and bus. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Sydney in September, with highs in Airlie Beach at 29°C and lows at 23°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 15th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel to Cairns.

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Kick off your visit on the 15th (Thu): see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour. On the next day, see the world from above with a helicopter tour, take in nature's colorful creations at Botanical Gardens, then relax and rejuvenate at some of the best spas, and finally make a trip to Palm Cove Jetty.

Getting from Airlie Beach to Cairns by combination of ferry and flight takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Airlie Beach in September, expect nights in Cairns to be about the same, around 22°C, while days are somewhat warmer, around 33°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 16th (Fri) so you can go by car to Port Douglas.

A holiday in Port Douglas balances an activity-filled getaway with plenty of opportunities to relax, thanks to its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and bustling beach life.
When in Port Douglas, make a side trip to see Rex Lookout in Wangetti, approximately Wangetti away. Spend the 17th (Sat) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's lots more to do: see exotic creatures in open habitats at a safari tour, go for a walk through Flagstaff Hill Walking Trail, look for all kinds of wild species at Mossman Gorge Centre, and take some stellar pictures from Flagstaff Hill Lookout.

A lush headland that's part of the forested Daintree Region, Cape Tribulation was so named by Lieutenant--later Captain--Cook in 1770, when his ship ran aground in the area.
Kick off your visit on the 20th (Tue): tour the pleasant surroundings at Dubuji Boardwalk, take in the pleasant sights at Marrdja Botanical Walk, and then trot along with a tour on horseback.
