Not far from Brussels, Mons is home to a World Heritage Site, the former home of Van Gogh, and Roman ruins.

The medieval town of Bruges centers around a canal, and the architecture of its historical district has made it a World Heritage Site.
Bring the kids along to Historic Centre of Brugge and Choco-Story - The Chocolate Museum. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Bruges: Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk en de Gravenkapel (in Kortrijk) and Menin Gate Memorial (in Ieper (Ypres)).
