Melk, a small town of about 5,000, hugs the south side of the Danube.
Take a break from the city and head to Die Perchtoldsdorfer Heide and Biospharenpark Wienerwald. Venture out of the city with trips to Weingut Ludwig Ehn (in Langenlois), Weingut Sepp Moser (in Oberrohrendorf) and Weingut Kolkmann (in Fels am Wagram). Next up on the itinerary: take in the spiritual surroundings of Melk Abbey, admire the verdant scenery at Wachau Valley, do a tasting at Weingut Nigl, and look for all kinds of wild species at Naturpark Sparbach.

Zell am See — 2 nights

Despite its small size, Zell am See is a well-visited tourist destination known mostly as a ski resort town, and it serves as an important transportation hub for the region.
On the 3rd (Mon), see the world from above with a helicopter tour, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Kitzsteinhorn, and then get outside with Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: get a dose of the wild on Natural High Adventure Tours Ltd and then look for all kinds of wild species at Sinne Erlebnispark an der Asitz Mittelstation.
