Gangneung — 4 nights

A large coastal city, Gangneung has been historically separated from much of the country because of the long, stretching mountain range that runs parallel to the sea.
Get in touch with nature at Ulsanbawi Rock and Yukdam Falls. Step off the beaten path and head to Gyeongpo Beach and Daegwanryeong Samyang Ranch. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Gangneung: Yangyang-gun (Naksansa Temple & Uisangdae), Woljeongsa Temple (in Pyeongchang-gun) and Sokcho (Teddy Bear Farm & Biryong Falls). The adventure continues: see the interesting displays at Ojukheon, wander the streets of Chodang Sundubu Village, visit a coastal fixture at Jumunjin Lighthouse, and contemplate the waterfront views at Yeongnangho Lake.

You can drive from Seoul to Gangneung in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Seoul in October, expect slightly colder with lows of 60°F in Gangneung. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Tue) to allow enough time to fly to Gyeongju.

One of the most popular tourist destinations in the Republic of Korea, Gyeongju combines a rich cultural heritage with mountain and coastal scenery.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Gyeongju Historic Area and Daewangam Park. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Cheonmachong Tomb and Gyeongju National Museum. Venture out of the city with trips to Daegu (February 28 Democratic Movement Memorial Park, Seonam Market, &more) and Ulsan (Ulsan Grand Park & Yeomposan Mountain). There's lots more to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, steep yourself in history at Cheomseongdae Observatory, take in the spiritual surroundings of Gyeongju Hyanggyo, and make a trip to Seochulji Pond in Gyeongju.

Getting from Gangneung to Gyeongju by flight takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. In October, daily temperatures in Gyeongju can reach 68°F, while at night they dip to 60°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 15th (Sat) to allow enough time to drive to Busan.

The country's second city, Busan has often been referred to as South Korea's summer capital.
