A land of vibrant towns and undulating rural areas, Hainaut province sits in the westernmost section of Belgium. Nestled against the French border, the "Green Province" often appears far removed from the rest of the country, its inhabitants heartily devoted to local carnivals steeped in centuries of history and tradition. Overlooked by many tourists, Hainaut remains one of the country's less-frequented regions. The town of Mons serves as Hainaut's major center of culture and provides a comfortable urban base for day trips to the nearby World Heritage-listed flint mines, used over 4,000 years ago.
