Pyrénées-Atlantiques is Basque Country set against the backdrop of the Pyrénées Mountains along the Atlantic coast where hiking, mountain biking, climbing, paragliding, rafting, surfing, fishing, and winter skiing flourish. This department in the Aquitaine region flourishes as a sunny holiday destination, offering sheltered beaches for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing, hiking in huge forests such as the Irati, and treks along the lush green valleys of the Adour and Bidasoa. Take in breathtaking scenery while sightseeing along the Corniche Road, a coastal path with interesting geology, botany, and fishing. Spain’s largest autonomous region, Castile and León was formed by the union of two ancient kingdoms. Old Castile and the Kingdom of León suffered separations and reunifications several times during the Middle Ages. This region’s wealth of historical attractions includes three cities that are World Heritage Sites. The countryside is punctuated by archeological sites, Roman mines, Gothic churches, and tiny villages established many centuries ago.
