Porto — 3 nights

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Family-friendly places like Walking tours and Douro River will thrill your kids. There's much more to do: snap pictures at Ponte de Dom Luis I, take in the spiritual surroundings of Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral), take a stroll through Ribeira do Porto, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Torre dos Clerigos.

To find reviews, where to stay, and other tourist information, go to the Porto travel planner.

Lisbon to Porto is an approximately 2.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a train. Traveling from Lisbon in August, expect Porto to be a bit cooler, temps between 28°C and 17°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 31st (Tue) to allow time to drive to Vila Nova de Gaia.

Vila Nova de Gaia — 4 nights

Across the Douro River from Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia touts famed Port wine lodges, where bottles are stored and aged.
You've now added Estacao Litoral da Aguda to your itinerary. Bring the kids along to Portugal dos Pequenitos and Jardim Botanico. Change things up with these side-trips from Vila Nova de Gaia: Coimbra (Praca do Comercio & University of Coimbra), Zoo Lourosa (in Santa Maria da Feira) and Praia Fluvial de Burgaes (in Vale de Cambra). Next up on the itinerary: cool off at Fratelli Aquapark, don't miss a visit to Capela do Senhor da Pedra, and see the interesting displays at Museu Pedagogico Luso Brasileiro.

Long accustomed to welcoming visitors from around the world, Porto District boasts a blend of attractions that include museums, galleries, restaurants, shops, historic monuments, and World Heritage-listed archaeological sites. The district's eponymous capital city serves as the gateway to the country's famed wine region, a leading supplier of some of the world's finest fortified wines. A paradise for sightseeing on foot, the historical city also features a well-preserved medieval quarter built over the foundations of ancient Roman ruins. Discover the city and its surrounding region on a boat tour along the Douro River, or head for the district's less-frequented interior to explore its pristine natural parks and rugged mountain regions.
