Trip Planner: Europe / UK / Wales / North Wales / Anglesey / Llanddeusant / Melin Llynnon
Melin Llynnon, or Llynnon Mill, is a gristmill located on the outskirts of the village of Llanddeusant on the island of Anglesey. It is the only surviving working windmill in Wales. The mill was built for £529, 11s in 1775–1776, on land owned by the surgeon Herbert Jones. It is classified as a tower mill. The machinery is within a stone tower and the moving top, or cap cwch, turns so that the sails hwyliau catch the wind from any direction. The tower was 9.3 metres tall and with four floors. It was used to drive machines for grinding corn, oats and barley. The first miller, Thomas Jones (1756–1846), worked it until his death. The position of miller was passed down through the generations, eventually going to a cousin William Pritchard.A storm in 1918 damaged the cap stopping it turning to face the wind. It still operated intermittently for the next six years when the wind was from the south-west. Eventually the mill closed and became increasingly dilapidated. It remained deserted and unused until the local council restored it between 1978 and 1986. It reopened in 1986 and now produces stoneground flour.Put Melin Llynnon on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Llanddeusant itinerary builder website.

I didn't even get into the car park let alone the shop entrance and I was welcomed by a friendly attendant who showed me to a parking space. The shop/reception to the windmill offered a small selection of gin and chocolate. The gin made locally and chocolate on site. The entrance assistant was really nice and welcoming, giving us guidance and information about the windmill, safari and roundhouses. The exhibits had plenty of interesting historical information and safari offered a game for children (small and large...the large being my dad) where they win a sticker and lollipop. The cafe at present is takeaway only, but worth the purchase of refreshments and donuts, which are outstanding. A highly recommended visit. The roundhouses are set up suggesting activities occur in there. It will be great to return in the summer to see what they do. Thanks for a great few hours. I'd love to see the windmill in full operation again. See you again soon.
I've been wanting to go here for ages and I wasn't disappointed. The mill was fascinating to look round. I haven't included photos inside because you should go and look yourself! The roundhouses were awe inspiring; amazing to see how sophisticated these dwellings were at a time when we risk thinking of people as primitive. The model animal safari was also really cool.
